A new initiative we are kicking off in 2025 is community building for our Sunshine Therapy Dogs volunteers.
Long-time volunteers, Jim and Melanie, are spearheading this initiative. We have such a large network of kind, friendly, like-minded volunteers. Why not facilitate some socials in a casual setting, off-duty? This sounded like the perfect way to provide a little fun to our volunteers!
Our first event in early March was a walk at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto. Jim shares a recap of the fun event below.
First Sunshine volunteer community building event
“We were surprised by the quick return of colder temperatures despite Saturday’s forecast for warmer weather. Regardless, several of us met at Toronto’s Evergreen Brickworks with our furry friends for our first weekend walk along the Moore Park ravine trail. Thank you to Ray, Jim, Arlene and Melanie for coming!
We departed from the Picnic Café with our excited pets and it seemed like everyone already knew each other, joined by our common bond of volunteerism. Similarly, the pups, Mimico Max, Ritter, Leila, Esme and Indigo, were glad to spend time with some friends. We met several other dog owners throughout our walk who were curious about the dogs and wanted to learn more about Sunshine Therapy. We enjoyed the banter and expressions of appreciation for our group; we may have even recruited an additional volunteer in the process!
With spring quickly approaching we plan on having more walks to continue to build community at Sunshine, and let our dogs play beyond our usual volunteer appointments. Whether you’re a regular volunteer or a new participant, we welcome you to join us in celebrating the joyous bond between us humans and our pets while exploring the natural beauty of Toronto. Stay connected with us for updates on the exact date and meeting point. See you on the trails!”
